Club forced to close? A

Welsh snooker club fears it is facing closure if the local authority raises its rent by 400 percent.

Pontypool Liberal Snooker Club currently pays £1000 annually

for its premises, but believes that could rise to as much as £5000 after Torfaen County Borough Council completes a £1.8m overhaul of the market complex where the club is located. Said club chairman Stephen Phillips: “They have said they will

try and relocate us, but why should we be pushed out after people have played snooker here since 1912? This building has never been used for anything else.” But councillor B. John Cunningham countered: “The long-

term viability of the indoor market is our priority and we have to consider whether peppercorn rents in newly-refurbished facilities are sustainable and for the wider benefit of everyone.” No decision has yet been made, Cunningham added.

ritish snooker and pool cloth manufacturerWSP Textiles is gearing up for its first significant investment in new equipment since its acquisition. New owners Vespa Capital will this year spend more than £250,000 at the

company’s two Gloucestershire factories, bought toward the end of last year from Milliken, the U.S. textile company. The first stage of investment will be at the Cam Mills near Dursley, where the

company produces its woollen yarn. This equipment will be up and running by Easter, freeing capacity needed to cope with global demand – especially in the Far East, where Strachan is primary supplier to many table makers and club operators. “As a long-standing British manufacturer and exporter, we are pleased to see renewed investment in the business,” said sales director Duncan Kettell (pictured). “The state-of-the-art equipment now being installed at our Cam plant will produce the high-quality yarn that is the starting point for making the best snooker and pool cloth anywhere in the world. “Cloth is a critical component in the

game and few manufacturers can match the expertise and care needed to produce the beautiful playing surface called for by players and tournament organisers. “Meeting demand is our top priority

this year. With further investment in the pipeline, we are now looking at developing new markets in Brazil, Russia and India,” he added.

...and launches Trilliards W

SP Textiles, the UK manufacturer of Strachan snooker and pool cloth formerly known as Milliken, launched a new cue sports game

called Trilliards at January’s European Amusement and Gaming Expo (EAG) at ExCeL in London. The game is based on the concept of combining noughts and crosses or

Connect Four with pool or bar billiards. The table comes with Strachan cloth and Aramith balls as standard, to give a professional playing experience. Said Matt Harris, sales manager forWSP’s UK distributor Suzo Happ:

“The show this year at ExCeL was our busiest to date with the stand busy at all times. The balance of offering the best range of premium products along with the new products such as Trilliards has ensured that the show was a success. “The Trilliards game seemed to be a real hit this year with the operators.

It’s great to have a brand new product to offer the pubs which is a skilled game but can be enjoyed by all. It’s a really addictive new game.” Added Stuart Gardiner, senior account manager for Strachan: “EAG has

quickly become established as a very important show for us as trading internationally becomes increasingly important. We have a great partner in Suzo Happ, which is a leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of gaming and amusements products to many UK operators.”

Jason Carter and Tom Bone, both from Wainfleet, played 184 frames over 53 hours to beat the previous 50-hour record. “It was really rough going but we got through. The first 20 hours seemed to go on forever but we kept on going even though we began to feel very bizarre with the lack of sleep,” Bone was quoted as saying.
