News Cannes-do Canning Town
Canning Town in the London borough of Newham is set to start this summer on a £600m regeneration, it was announced at MIPIM. The council’s redevelopment of the
town centre, includes a 70,000 sq ft Morrison’s supermarket as a main retail anchor, is being built with French
construction firm, Bouygues Development. It forms part of the London Borough of Newham’s £3.7bn Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme. Phase one of the scheme will
comprise 179 residential units along with the supermarket.
UK cities call for more local control
UK cities need to be smarter if they want to thrive, according to panelists at an EG/GVA UK cities debate at MIPIM yesterday. Four speakers from the UK’s key cities called for more local control while maintaining a national perspective. Manchester council’s chief
executive Sir Howard Bernstein said: “We have to continually assess market conditions and come up with
innovative funding solutions.” Leeds LEP chair Neil McLean said:
“We need to be more adventurous with funding, aggregate funds and leverage from them.” Fellow panelists were London’s Sir
Edward Lister, Birmingham city council leader Mike Whitby and GVA’s Stephen Hollowood and you can see a video recording of the entire debate online next week.
