News BRIEFS

Cash injections into the London office market by global investors will continue until at least 2016, according

to research unveiled at MIPIM by Jones Lang

LaSalle. Some £52bn of overseas equity will be

targeting UK real estate, with an emphasis on London, says JLL.

Manchester-based Ask Developments has

announced it will deliver offices at its First Street scheme in Manchester with rents 30% lower

than the city’s central business district. Ask

plans to build up to 1m sq ft of “affordable” offices at the scheme.

Nearly a third of Birmingham retail and office space is owned by international investors, a GVA report has found. Launched today at MIPIM, research

analysed more than 15m sq ft of commercial space in Birmingham’s central business district and found that 20% is wholly owned by overseas investors with a further 12% part- owned. Irish and US investor dominate holding 8% each with German investors holding around 5%.

EXPRESS PLANS

Miller Developments and Andy Ruhan’s Bridgehouse Capital have submitted a joint planning application for the development of a new 210-bedroom Holiday Inn Express hotel, plus an update to the masterplan at the £400m Arena Central development in Birmingham.

Third of Birmingham CBD in foreign ownership

Grade A office stock is most popular

with foreign buyers with more than half in overseas ownership. Ian Stringer, regional senior director,

GVA, said: “Before undertaking the survey we estimated the figure to be around 20%, so we were surprised it was considerably higher. “This research has provided us with a

definitive assessment of the extent of overseas investment within the city’s central business district, which is outside of public sector ownership.”
