It’s no surprise to readers of EnCompass that AAA Colorado would applaud Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood’s campaign against distracted driving. He’s seen the same data we see, and it convinces him that all states should ban texting while driving. Colorado is one of 35 states with texting bans. We
testified at the state Capitol in support of the ban, and we encourage vigorous police enforcement of it. But there’s more to making Colorado roads safer
than passing a law. Each of us must take complete responsibility for what we do behind
the wheel of a two-ton steel object moving at high speed in close proximity to other people. There can be great joy in driving our cars safely through the most scenic countryside on the planet, but also great sorrow when we allow phones, food, or friends to distract us for even a few seconds and crash into another driver’s car. Taking total
responsibility for our decisions can help us make better decisions in every aspect of life. I encourage everyone who works with me to accept total responsibility for their decisions. And I remind them who and what they should think of first: Our members’ safety, security and peace of mind. To fulfill that promise, all of us must be headed in the same direction

and continually reminded of it, because like driving a car, it’s easy to get distracted. Looking back, it is very satisfying to see that by keeping our eyes on the
