2.5kW 1U hot swap, front end power supplies from TDK-Lambda

TDK-Lambda UK has expanded the HFE series of 1U high, single output AC-DC hot swap, front end power supplies with the addition of 2.5kW models. Offering a power density of 29W/in3, the HFE2500 power supply is well-suited for 2.5kW bulk power and Distributed Power Architecture (DPA) applications. All models feature full current- sharing capabilities and internal ORing MOSFET for isolation to support hot-swap and redundancy applications such as those found in servers, datacom, data storage, communications, broadcast, military (COTS), medical, process control and industrial automation. Operating from a universal 85 to 265Vac input, the HFE2500 features high efficiency of up to 93%, which minimises heat dissipation and power consumption. Up to ±20% output voltage adjustment is possible, enabling the HFE2500 to be customer set according to specific needs. Output voltage is programmable by resistance, external voltage or optional PMBus compatible I”C communication interface. Output current is external voltage or optional PM bus programmable.

The HFE2500-12, -24 and -48 power supplies, with dimensions of 325 x 107 x 41mm, can be used individually or up to four units can be mounted into a dedicated 1U rack delivering 10kW. A total of 8 units can be configured in parallel to form a hot swap N+1 redundant power system with single wire current sharing. A keying system prevents mis-insertion of modules into adjacent racks of differing voltage. Each power supply has variable speed, temperature-

controlled cooling fans and can operate in temperatures ranging from -10 to +70°C. Over voltage, over current and over temperature are standard protection features. For system monitoring, there are signal returns for DC OK, AC-fail, over temperature and PS exist. Remote ON/OFF control and remote sense are included. Monitoring is also available via the optional PMBus compatible I”C interface and includes a fan fail alarm.

The TDK-Lambda HFE2500 hot swap front end power supplies comply with EN55022 and FCC part 15 Class A radiated and Class B conducted emissions and meet IEC61000-4-2, - 3, -4, -5, -6, -8, and -11 immunity. The power supply units are safety approved to EN/UL 60950-1 edition 2 with CE mark. All HFE2500 power supplies from TDK-Lambda are backed by a three-year warranty.

Ideal launches 27AB series high efficiency DC/DC converter family

Ideal Power has launched the 27AB series high efficiency DC/DC converter family. This high efficiency converter is based on the Industry Standard 2” x 1” Package and Pin and as a result provides 4 different Output Voltages at up to 40W/10A from either a 2:1 or 4:1 DC Input Voltage range.

Designed to meet the latest ROHS-6

requirements and utilising a Patented “Coupled Inductor SR” Topology, the low profile six sided metal enclosed converter has an operating temperature of -40C to +110C. Internal heat- spots are eliminated using Patented military grade silicone potting.

These units have been designed for telecom, instrumentation, industrial, data processing and networking applications including ‘bus’ converter applications.

While all models are available from stock (positive enable) other models and variations are available.

Toshiba takes high-speed inverter switching IGBT to 1350V

Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has announced its first high-speed, integrated IGBT to feature a voltage rating up to 1350V. Designed for voltage resonator inverter switching, the new device will address growing demands for IGBTs with higher voltage withstand capabilities. The N-channel ‘enhancement mode’ GT40RR21 saves space and component count by combining an IGBT and a reverse recovery freewheeling diode into a single, compact monolithic device. Suitable for high-temperature operation, target applications for the IGBT include induction heating and induction cooking appliances. Toshiba’s new device supports very high-speed operation and can handle peak pulse currents as high as 200A for 3µs. Low turn-off switching losses – typically 0.30mJ at a case temperature (Tc) of 25ºC and 0.54mJ at a Tc of 125ºC – ensure high-efficiency operation.

The 1350V GT40RR21 is designed to operate with junction temperatures up to 175ºC. At 25ºC maximum collector current is 40A, and this falls by only 5A at a temperature of 100ºC.

40 February 2012 Components in Electronics

Typical saturation voltage at 25ºC (VCS(sat)) is only 2.0V. Maximum diode forward voltage/current is rated at 3.0V/20A. Supplied in a TO-3P(N), TO247-equivalent package, the GT40RR21 measures just 15.5mm x 20.0mm x 4.5mm. Engineering samples are available now and mass production is scheduled for Q3 2012.
