KATHLEEN KRIEGER A LEADING ROLE
NOMINATING COMMITTEE FINDS BEST CANDIDATES TO LEAD U.S. FIGURE SKATING by LARRY KRIWANEK
T
he management of the business and af- fairs for U.S. Figure Skating is vested in a 15-member Board of Directors made
up of six officers — a president, three vice presi- dents (one from each section), a secretary and a treasurer — four group coordinators, two coaches and three athletes. In addition, U.S. Figure Skat- ing has 32 permanent committees responsible for enforcing and carrying out the official rules, with each committee being led by a committee chair. With the exception of the athletes, the board
members are elected by the Governing Council to serve one-year terms. Officers can serve up to four consecutive terms while other board mem- bers can serve up to three. Committee chairs are appointed by the president. Te majority of these leaders are identified through the work of U.S. Figure Skating’s Nominating Committee before being elected or appointed. Te Nominating Committee is a 12-mem- ber committee responsible for recommending suitably qualified candidates for all board and committee chair positions, with the exception of the athlete board member and Athletes Advisory chair positions, for which candidates are nomi- nated and elected by the athletes, and the Audit and Compensation Committee chair positions.
COMPOSITION OF THE
NOMINATING COMMITTEE Members of the Nominating Committee —
made up of three athletes (one from each section) and nine other members (one from each region) — are elected at each annual Governing Council meeting. Athlete members serve one-year terms and
are the only members who may serve consecu- tive terms. Te other nine members are elected for two-year terms. To keep some continuity on the committee, three members (one from each section) are elected in odd-numbered years, and six members (two from each section) are elected in even-numbered years. Which members are elected each year is based on regional represen- tation so that each region has a member on the Nominating Committee at all times. Regional representation is based on the location of a mem- ber’s home club or the location of an individual

member’s legal residence. Athlete members are elected by the athletes via an online election process. Te other three or six members elected each year are elected in the sectional caucuses held at Governing Coun- cil. Each caucus elects the members only for the regions within its section. For example, in odd- numbered years, the Eastern Sectional caucus will elect a member from the South Atlantic Region and, in even-numbered years, that caucus will elect a member from the North Atlantic Region and a member from the New England Region. After all the members have been elected, the outgoing chair of the Nominating Committee conducts an e-mail election to determine which member will serve as chair of the committee for the following year.
CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE, INCLUDING REGION REPRESENTED ARE:
LARRY KRIWANEK (SWP), CHAIR ANNE CAMMETT (NA) JOHN COLE (SA) PHILLIP DEAVER (NWP)

Athlete mem- bers may serve as members of the Board of Direc- tors and/or chair of the Athletes Advisory Com- mittee while on and/or immediately after serving on the Nominating Committee
OPERATION OF THE
NOMINATING COMMITTEE Te Nominating Committee meets twice in
person each year and communicates additionally by e-mail and conference call.
Te first in-person meeting is held in the fall to discuss potential candidates for all positions. Following this meeting, a first round of letters of interest is sent to potential candidates, with re- sponses due back sometime in December. Te committee also solicits recommenda-
tions from any U.S. Figure Skating member wishing to make a suggestion. Such recommen- dations can be submitted via the U.S. Figure Skating Members Only site from late October to Dec. 31. To submit one or more nominations, a U.S. Figure Skating member should log in to
www.usfsaonline.org, select “Nominations” from the “Member” box on the left side of the page and follow the instructions. Following the member nomination period, the committee holds a conference call to discuss the member recommendations, and a second round of letters of interest is sent after this call. Additional letters of interest are sent as qualified candidates are identified.
Te final in-person meeting is held after the U.S. Championships but before March 1. Final recommendations will be made at this meeting, and candidates will be called to confirm their commitment to serve. Once the list of nominees is finalized, and
no later than March 1, the slate of nominees will be published on U.S. Figure Skating Online and in the Governing Council Meeting Book (avail- able on the Members Only site in April). Te publications will include a resume and statement of purpose from each of the candidates.
