C.A.R. Members Make Meals for Fisher House
Members of the Red, White, and Blue C.A.R. Society met on December 23, to prepare meals for military families staying at the two Fisher Houses at the Naval Medical Center San Diego for the holidays. A Fisher House is "a home away from home" for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. Members had previously toured the Fisher House facilities when they learned that no meals would be provided through the holidays. A shopping list was com- piled and, since there are two hous- es, two complete meals were neces- sary to serve up to 15 people in each house. Members made salads, pasta, meatballs and sauce, and brownies for dessert, and included grated cheese, garlic bread and drinks, then packaged the meals to take to the Fisher Houses. Meals are served independently at the Fishers Houses; the families serve themselves and clean up when fin- ished.
The initial group of graduates from the Escondido Union High School District "MAP Your Future" program is off to a great start at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). According to a report released by the University, over 82% of the MAP Your Future students achieved a 3.0 or better grade point average in their first semester on the San Marcos cam- pus. Three of those students, (left to right in photo below) Cindy Guillen, Lisa Troung, and Tricia Alcid, completed the semester with a 4.0 grade point average. 97 percent of the total students earned a grade point average of 2.50 or better.
ed from the four-year program in May of 2011 and nearly 300 more are expected to complete the pro- gram requirements by May of 2012. Over 3,000 students, grades 9-12, are in the MAP program on the three district campuses, Escondido, Orange Glen and San Pasqual.
Also, students who complete the program and enroll in CSUSM are awarded scholarships from the MAP Foundation for Academic Success, Inc. The Foundation is also beaming at the early results of the first class. "We are happy to be a part of the success of these stu- dents and will continue to support their efforts as best we can." said MAP Foundation Board Member Don Darrock. "Congratulations to each of them on their early suc- cess."
