A Community Service of Arie de Jong Escondido • Mayor Sam Abed
Investing in Escondido’s Future
improvements this past year to make our community more attrac- tive to new businesses and indus- tries. These include the comple- tion of improvements in the Mercado District, the completion of the Alexander Area Phase II Water Main Improvement Project, and the Montview Water Main Replacement {roject, as well as the Maple Street Pedestrian Plaza which is expected to start construction this month and be completed by early fall.
Escondido has invested mil- lions of dollars in capital
In addition, we are seeing more private investment in our city.
Westfield recently agreed to invest more than $56 million to improve the mall. The renovation will include a three story Target Store, two new restaurants, overhauling the food court, a revitalizing the interior of the shopping center. Wal-Mart has also invested in Escondido and hopes to have its new store on East Valley Parkway opened by the end of the year. Stone Brewery is expanding its facility, adding a boutique hotel and administrative offices. Construction has begun again on the Paramount and Venue projects and will bring nearly 300 urban living housing units to downtown Escondido.
With all of this investment, both public and private, there is a renewed excitement and enthusi- asm about our city. Escondido is becoming a city to watch!

Inspire an App
Challenge, a contest for software developers to make apps using data from the city and other cooperating agencies.
In mid- January, we launched the AT&T San Diego Apps
The first phase of the contest – in which members of the public can submit ideas to inspire the software developers – is coming to a close. We want to hear from you before Friday, Feb. 10 on your idea for an app for your desktop computer, tablet or mobile phone. What infor- mation could you use that would make San Diego more livable or increase your access to government?

To provide your idea for the devel- opers in the Apps Challenge, just go to
ideas.sdappschallenge.com and type in your thoughts on what you’d like to see. It’s that simple. So far, we’ve received some really terrific ideas. One San Diegan said he wants an app that allows him to give/find any surplus items with my neighbors, like homegrown fruit, soil from compost, transplantable garden trimmings. Another wants an app that would provide “smart directions” that route you around traffic slowdowns. Yet another idea was for an app that combines sched- ules for all the region’s transporta- tion options – bus, trolley, Coaster, Sprinter, Amtrak and Coronado ferry – into a single app.
There are dozens more ideas where those came from. Check out the site and give us your own wish list.
McCreary, the man accused of shooting Morayma Denise Rodriguez to death, was well known to law enforcement. He has been arresed on numerous occasions and had spent much of his life behind bars. He has a continuing his- tory of having used metham- phetamine since he was a young teenager. Ever since that habit began, he had been in trouble with the law.
McCreary was arrested by Sheriff’s deputies
last
Saturday following a chase. The Sheriff’s office has no comment on motive.
San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond
San Marcos issued Long-
Awaited Permits to Move
Forward with Creek District Project
I’m pleased to announce that the city has received the environmental permits neces- sary to move forward with the highly antic- ipated San Marcos Creek District. The dis- trict will include mixed-use development, a 73-acre habitat preserve, environmental enhancements and infrastructure improve- ments like roadway, bridges and flood con- trol.
Construction on Phase 1 of public infra- structure improvements should get under way by late summer or early fall and will include the first portion of habitat restora- tion/expansion, installation of a flood wall
and linear park along Discovery Street, widening of Discovery Street, construction of Creekside Drive, and construction of the Creekside Promenade. Future phases of public infrastructure will occur over rough- ly a five-year period following the Phase 1 projects.
While the City will pay for about $50 mil- lion in backbone public infrastructure improvements, it will rely on private devel- opers to build the mixed-use commercial and residential portions of the district.
The first private development will be The Residences and Shoppes at Creekside, which is slated to begin construction in late fall and open about a year later. This proj- ect will include approximately 100 afford- able apartments, 26,500 square feet of com- mercial space, a community garden, meet- ing space and small public park.
Oceanside • Mayor Jim Wood
Disposal Drop- Off Centers
January 30th, Oceanside residents will be able to conveniently and responsibly dispose of home-gen- erated sharps at no cost at two new drop-off locations: El Corazon Senior Center (3302 Senior Center Drive) and Country Club Senior Center (455 Country Club Lane). Oceanside residents can also continue to uti- lize the free drop-off container provided at
B e g i n n i n g
Management Center located at 2880 Industry Street. Home-gen- erated sharps waste include:
the Waste
Free Home- Generated Sharps
hypodermic needles, pen nee- dles, intravenous needles, lancets and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications derived from a resident’s household. As always, all sharps must be placed in a securely sealed rigid contain- er before being placed into a drop-off box. This additional precautionary measure will assist in keeping our sanitation service workers safe, and by utilizing these drop-off collection sites, residents will further assist the City of Oceanside in meeting California state mandates which prohibit the disposal of these materials into our waste stream. I send my thanks to all those who participate in this worth- while endeavor!
