The New Snowex Battery Boxes Are Here… Launched from Broadwood International for the 2012 season, the new battery box option is now available for the well-known SnowEx Salt Spreaders. The battery box which can be fitted to any of the trailed spreaders means that the towing vehicle does not need to be hard wired with the wiring harness and the controller increasing the machines versatility as it can simply be hitched to any vehicle. The battery box mounted onto the drawbar of the trailer unit converts the trailed spreader into a self contained unit with its own power source. The battery is housed inside a weather-proof box, together with the controller which allows infinite variation of the auger and disc speed according to the particular application. The controller being pre-set, the operator can simply turn the machine on and off from in the driving position via the fly lead and switch. This allows the SnowEx spreader to be hitched behind any towing vehicle at short notice and go spreading as the wiring harness no longer needs to be hard wired into the vehicle. The battery simply needs re-charging on a normal workshop battery charger ready for the next spreading session. This means the SnowEx range of spreaders is now more extensive than before.
A full line-up of SnowEx machines are available from the utility spreaders which can be towed behind an ATV, garden tractor or a fork lift etc right through to the large capacity trailed units used by the local authority and the contractor for highway use. In between, there are many models for every application whether the requirement is for a tractor mounted machine, a truck mounted unit, a trailed spreader or even a utility mounted unit, it can be found in the SnowEx range. Thanks to the standard vibration unit and the auger feed system, SnowEx Spreaders will not only spread the free flowing material but even the worse rock salt which is the acid test
for any spreader presents no problem to the SnowEx. Reply No. 24 Blythewood’s Bright Green
Lighting Blythewood Plant Hire, part of the Doyle plc construction group, have confirmed a purchase of a fleet of VB9 lighting towers from the leading manufacturer, TowerLight. The lighting sets are all set to be distributed around all four Blythewood depots, in Welwyn, Stevenage, Peterborough and Warrington. Commenting on their latest fleet investment, David Hazell, Blythewood’s
Operations Director said, “We chose the VB9 principally because of its green credentials and its light coverage. Our clients are calling for products that help them save fuel, reduce their overall costs, whilst helping to benefit the wider environment, in terms of cleaner emissions and quieter operation. The VB9 delivers all of these demands without compromising safe light levels.” The VB9 is the next generation in environmentally sound lighting towers. The
VB9 incorporates a 170-litre capacity fuel tank with a running time between refuelling of 340 hours, this means that operators are spared from refuelling each light once a week to just once a month. Powered by an air-cooled diesel engine with 12V electric start and fitted into a whisper quiet sound proof canopy, the VB9 incorporates easy access for maintenance with large lockable doors. The VB9 brings together genuine
environment qualities in terms of lower fuel consumption, reduced transport costs, less noise pollution, whilst continuing to maintain safe and proper lighting. A site manager can rely on only refuelling a VB9 once a month, resulting in fewer operators driving to or around a site on a frequent basis. TowerLight have calculated that this could reduce an operator costs for transportation of up to 25%, together with a potential saving of £300 per month on fuel.

Class Leader The latest Makita BHS630 18v Lithium-ion circular saw, with a 165mm diameter blade, has a 66mm depth of cut which is the same as a saw with a 190mm blade and clearly makes this new saw the best in the 165mm class. This is achieved by a new housing design and having the drive shaft as low as possible to the base plate. The BHS630 also has the motor on the left side of the machine which gives a clear view of the cutting line and is suitable for either right or left handed operation. The new Makita BHS630 cordless circular saw, powered by 18v Lithium-ion
cells, has a 730watt motor that will run the blade up to 3,100rpm. This motor drives the gear train with the output shaft close to the base plate which is how the 165mm blade can cut 66mm deep into timber. At 45° the blade will cut 46mm deep. The proven Makita electric brake system stops the blade immediately the control trigger is released. The base plate parallel adjustment is robust and allows fine adjustment of
cutting angles. The rip fence is equally accurate and easy to position. Weighing just 3.5kg, and with the easy-grip main handle placed directly above the drive shaft, this is a well balanced saw with high manoeuvrability. The motor is mounted to the left hand side of the blade, the opposite side to other Makita saws in this category, but has the same layout as mains saws in the Makita range. This will make the transition from mains to cordless less difficult. Additional features included in the new BHS630 circular saw are twin LED job-
lights and a useful blower system that clears the work piece to enhance accuracy. Delivered either as machine-only, for those tradesmen with sufficient Makita 18v Li-ion cells, or as a complete kit in robust carry case with two batteries and new slim-line DC18RC charger – charging time 22 minutes – this new saw will prove popular for all site or shop woodwork operations.
