Colorado has 25 Scenic and Historic Byways covering every area of the state, and 11 of these amazing routes also have the prestige of being federally designated as America’s Scenic Byways. Here we use a compilation of several of these routes to provide sample driving tours

NATIONAL PARKS, HOT SPRINGS AND A TRAIN RIDE U t a h
Day 1 Shop and dine in Denver’s lively 16th Street Mall area and stay overnight.
Day 2 Travel south by rental car to the Colorado Springs area, home to the Garden of the Gods, the US Air Force Academy and Pikes Peak. Stay overnight.
Day 3 Continue south to the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Stay in Alamosa.
Day 4 Drive west to ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and stay in Durango.
Day 5 Continue west to Mesa Verde National Park with an overnight stay in Cortez.
Day 6 Travel north to Ouray, home of a giant hot springs pool, continuing north with an optional diversion east to the historic ski resort of Telluride. Turn east at Montrose for the Black Canyon
of the Gunnison National Park, retracing your route to continue north-west to stay overnight in Grand Junction, home of the Colorado National Monument.
Day 7 Travel east, perhaps enjoying a swim in the world’s largest mineral springs pool at Glenwood Springs, turning north to lakeside Grand Lake, the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. View stunning scenery along Trail Ridge Road (open May to October), exiting east for an overnight stay in Estes Park.

Day 8 Return to Denver. Canyonlands NP

Day 1 Visit such Denver attractions as the Denver Art Museum and History Colorado Center. Enjoy a Denver hotel.
Day 2 Head west by rental car to visit the historic Opera House in the former mining boomtown of Central City and the gaming casinos there, or in nearby Black Hawk. T en take a scenic ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad before heading north to Grand Lake for an overnight stay.
Day 3 Enter Rocky Mountain National Park and cross the Continental Divide via Trail Ridge Road, looking for wildlife along the way. Stay in Estes Park.

Day 4 Continue south-east to enjoy the cafés and shops along Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall. Stay overnight.

In the mountains you’ll average only about 50 miles (80km) per hour; if you stop along the way for photos, it will be even less. Note that there are Colorado Welcome Centers in Alamosa, Burlington, Cortez, Dinosaur, Fort Collins, Fruita, Julesburg, Lamar, Red Rocks, Silverthorne and Trinidad.
