With daily trips from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay area at Emeryville, the California Zephyr travels across the wide, open plains of the Nebraska heartland before entering Colorado and the “Mile High City” of Denver, home to eight professional sports teams and a thriving cultural scene that has earned the city the title of “Arts Capital of the West.” From Denver, the California Zephyr continues its


climb through the majestic Rocky Mountains, crossing the Continental Divide at an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet within the 6.2-mile Moffat Tunnel. Travelers will spy the Devil’s Thumb rock formation near Fraser, home of the Winter Park resort area. Known as “Mountain Bike Capital USA,” Winter Park boasts more than 600 miles of mountain biking trails along with 100 acres of skiing. The area is also a popular spot for whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. At Granby, travelers will fi nd the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and its 359 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. With fi ve campgrounds and 60 mountains that exceed 12,000 feet, the park welcomes campers and mountain climbers as well as snow-shoe enthusiasts and cross- country skiers in the winter months.
