Hawaiian Heat Tillandsias, including red Tillandsia rothii and silvery T. xero- graphica, nest in bowls to brighten this sunny patio on Hawaii’s Big Island. The lush edging behind them skillfully blends tropi- cals with various leaf shapes and colors, including apple green elephant’s ear (Colocasia esculenta), coffee- and apricot-hued ti plants (Cordyline fruticosa), and a blue fan palm (Bismarkia nobilis). A feathery queen palm and an African tulip tree with orange blooms grow in back. Design: Davis Dalbok, Living Green.
California Gold » Orange Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire’ echoes the hues of the vibrant patina of the reclaimed-steel art piece (by 5 Feet from the Moon) on the fence. Its companions include char- treuse Cotinus coggygria ‘Golden Spirit’, silver tree (Leucaden- dron argenteum), ‘Big Red’ kangaroo paw, and purple smoke tree (clustered, center); and silvery Albany woollybush (Adenan- thos × cunninghamii), Agave attenuata ‘Nova’, and Senecio mandraliscae (front). Design: DIG Gardens.
Desert Dream Crowned with ripening red fruits, a sculptural prickly pear cactus presides over this shapely planting in Ojai, California, along with columnar Cereus peruvianus and bristly Yucca whipplei. A tiny water feature adds a cooling touch. Design: Paul Hendershot.
