TOMORROW’S GARDEN

15

Northwest Native Douglas fi rs inspired the design of this meadow garden on Puget Sound. Gold-tinged bigleaf maples, tawny plumed Japanese silver grass, and mounds of cinnamon brown New Zealand hair sedge give the garden its billowy feel. Scotch moss and a mountain hemlock grow in foreground. Design: Susan Calhoun, Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Desert

A rich mix of desert plants fringe this patio in Tucson. Feathery cassia (Senna artemisioides), red lantana, and blue Cleveland sage create a sense of enclosure; golden barrel cactus cluster at the base of the boulder at left. Indian blanket fl ower (Gaillardia) fi lls a large container behind. Design: Elizabeth Przygoda, Tucson.
