14 TOMORROW’S GARDEN
Regional
Gardens that mimic their region’s natural habitats celebrate the true beauty of the West.
Mountains This rustic garden grows near Aspen, Colorado, against a backdrop of tall cottonwoods and conifers. Native grass meadows surround groves of aspen trees, while sprays of wildfl owers—including blue lupines and white Shasta daisies— evoke true Rocky Mountain meadows. Design: Richard Shaw, Design Workshop.
Coast »
Rugged and windswept, a shapely Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) accents this planting on a beach near Carmel, California. In foreground, Calamagrostis nutkaensis, California fi eld sedge (Carex praegracilis), and Leymus ‘Canyon Prince’ catch the late-afternoon sunlight in their leaves. Fleshy, mounding aeoniums grow nearby. Design: Bernard Trainor.
