MRes in Social Anthropology with Pacific Studies This newMasters course is designed with those students in mind who have a special interest in the Pacific andMelanesia, either because they wish to go on to do their fieldwork for an anthropology PhD in the region or because they wish towork there in some other capacity – e.g. in an NGO, in development projects, in multinational corporations with interests in the region. The courses in anthropological methods will be taken in common with students taking the existing MRes in Social Anthropology with the two new courses being devoted to the history, languages, cultures and varieties of social organisation ofMelanesia and the Pacific and their significance for the contemporary lives of its many peoples.


MRes in Social Anthropology with African Studies This programme aims to combine an advanced degree in the Social Anthropology of Africa with the teaching of a range of research-based skills that prepare the student for independent research. Students will gain detailed insight into the social and cultural commonalities and differences which, historically and in the present day, shape and transformthe contemporary lives of the many peoples of Africa. At the same time they will be learning howto put to use the specifically anthropological methods that provide the basis for this formof knowledge.
