External Funding is available from a variety of sources. Competition for such awards is keen, and it is essential that when drawing up your proposal youwork closely with your prospective supervisor. You should prepare your proposalwell in advance of the funding body’s deadline; for entry in September this deadline is normally sometime during the preceding spring, but it can be as early as November. External awards for research postgraduates are available from:
• The Economic and Social Research Council (UK and European Community applicants) – The ESRC recognises the Department of Social Anthropology as a‘1+3’department, with CASE standing. ESRC-funded research studentships may therefore be held in the Department.

• The Carnegie Trust for Universities in Scotland –‘Carnegie Scholarships’normally cover fees and standard living expenses. Available to Scottish nationals or to applicants with an undergraduate degree from a Scottish university. A first class undergraduate degree is usually
expected.www.carnegie-trust.org
• Royal Anthropological Institute – Grants in varying categories are available to support both fieldwork and
writing-up.www.therai.org.uk
• Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research (all nationalities eligible) – Provides awards of around $15,000 to support postgraduate
research.www.wennergren.org
If you are intending to apply for any of these sources of funding you should contact your supervisor or the Departmental postgraduate co-ordinator for addresses, application forms and advice or, alternatively, write directly to the funding body. Note that the‘Grants Register’, available in university reference libraries, provides details of further, more specialist, sources of funding – though the sums available are usually modest.
