Figs. 1 and 2. This casting for a bridge assembly showed a void after machining. While the void had no contact or wear with any other structure on the assembled bridge, it caused problems in the sourcing process due to insuffi cient inspection requirements.
metalcaster drafted and submitted a request for information to accept the Charpy test values for the wrought grade ASTM A-572 Grade 50. T is grade was selected from the list of materials because it was closest in tensile and yield strengths to the cast material. Offi cial approval required ap- proximately two weeks more than the expected timeframe.
Problem 2: Insuffi cient Weld Repair Requirements
On a sizable purchase order of
three different steel parts totaling close to 100 castings, a weld repair requirement was discovered after the initial quoting process. The speci- fication was for both mapping and approval for all welds.
Repercussions When the new requirements
arose, the casting supplier was forced to increase the casting price. The customer canceled the purchase order on the grounds that previous metalcasters had produced the parts without supplying a weld map or making a request for welding.
Problem 3: Improper Inspection Specifi cation
A recent project encompassed seven
part numbers and 28 steel castings with an approximate total weight of 278,532 lbs. T e customer was well
