Cylinder Head Drives Diesel Engine
Cast Component: 6.7-L cylinder head. Material: Aluminum-silicon alloy (356-type). Process: Semi-permanent mold.
Application: Diesel/internal combustion engine.
Casting Supplier: Nemak, Garcia, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Customer Name: Ford Motor Co., Detriot, Mich.
• Using a proprietary inorganic binder to make the sand cores, Nemak completed and launched the cylinder head project in two years rather than the projected fi ve.
• T e high temperature resistant alloy was required for the 400 horsepower diesel engine application.
• Nemak was able to increase me- chanical properties by achieving lower dendrite arm spacing (the distance between crystals of solidifi ed metal) at the combustion chambers using one runner to fi ll the mold.
• T e part features cast-in positive crank case ventilation.
