orld casting production increased 13.7% from 2009 to 2010, an indication the world is coming out of the recent economic downturn, according to this year’s Metal Cast- ing Design & Purchasing (MCDP) Census of World Casting Produc- tion. However, total world casting

production, 91.4 million metric tons, is still down from the 2008 total of 93.5 million metric tons and the peak point in 2007 of 94.9 million metric tons. Of the 36 countries that provided census data, only four countries reported

a decrease in casting production. In 2009, only fi ve nations reported growth. Canada, Noway, Serbia and Slovenia reported decreases. Taiwan showed the biggest growth, increasing its casting production by 42%. Likewise, Brazil saw signifi cant gains from 2009, showing a 41% casting production increase. T e top-10 list is virtually unchanged from last year, with Germany, Japan and

Russia reshuffl ing their order in the number four, fi ve and six spots. China, India and the U.S. are still fi rst, second and third, and Brazil, Korea, France and Italy hold the seventh through 10th

spots. T e top 10 nations produced 88% of the

global total, the same percentage as in 2009. T e breakdown of world casting production by metal has remained similar to

2009, with gray iron taking up 48% of the total 91.4 million tons. After four straight years of reducing its casting production, the U.S.

reported an 11.2% increase. India continues to make significant pro- duction gains, and its 22% increase puts it in second place. MCDP polls the major casting

producing nations for the annual census. T e data reported here is sup- plied by each nation’s metalcasting association or similar representative. Countries that did not participate this year were Denmark, Mongolia, Russia and Ukraine. T ese countries remain listed according to the last year they participated.
