Savings Of Aggregate Billing Your data center can enjoy the savings of aggregate billing by collecting the billings from your several locations into a single bill.

If I asked you what has a wheel, a seat, and an engine, you'd probably say "a car." But it could also be a motorcycle or a plane. You wouldn't see a 1963 Lincoln Continental until all the pieces were brought together.

Similarly, you can't get the big picture of your energy expenses until you see them all on one bill. Then you have information - the type you need to make choices on how best to spend (and cut) your energy dollars.

For instance, you can:

· Monitor energy consumption from your different locations and see which ones are operating most efficiently. · Analyze performance to avoid charges at peak times. For instance, you could use your on-site generators when utility charges are the highest. · Analyze your total energy consumption. · Collect information on energy from power meters at different locations within the same center. Potential electrical distribution problems may be uncovered, and you could identify and troubleshoot them.

· Uncover erroneous charges (see sidebar).

All this can be used to optimize center performance and save on your energy dollars.

And, perhaps most importantly, you could identify the impacts of the rates from different utility companies.

Working with an energy brokerage to lower and aggregate your bills is a great way to use energy savings for data center profits. An additional way is to use a cogeneration system to help you save money.

Aggregate Billing Case Study Are you sure every charge on your utility bill is a fee you really have to pay? A good broker can help you determine this.

Mario Leone is manager of Monaca, a borough of 5700 located 25 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He engaged an energy broker that aggregated his billing. The savings have been impressive.

“They were able to reduce the tariff on our street lights, which I was sure was not possible and noticed that we were paying sales tax on our bills as well,” said Leone. “They researched this issue, found the correct forms, and because of this we will be saving $6,000-$7,000 per year on this. As a municipal entity, we do not have to pay sales tax on our purchases. This was buried in the confusing line items on our bills.”

The energy brokers were able to consolidate the number of bills from the utility company. This reduced the bill surcharge the borough had to pay.
