Current Electrical and Natural Gas Deregulated States So, where are you? Check the current electrical and natural gas deregulated states map below.
If your data center is in a deregulated state, you're eligible for savings! Now, let's learn how the electricity business is set up and what your data center has to deal with these days.
Generation of Electricity and the Transmission/ Distribution Service
Companies The difference between the generation of electricity and the transmission/distribution service companies is like the difference between a farm, a truck, and a store.
Let's take potatoes, for instance. They're grown on a farm, transported via a long haul truck, and then go to a supermarket, where you buy them. These three services may be provided by different companies.

Electricity works much the same way. The current starts out at a generator, moves onto a long haul transmission facility, and then goes to a distribution service company, where you can purchase it. Three different companies may provide each service.
A generator (the farm) is the source of electricity - anything from a group of windmills to a nuclear power plant.
Transmission (the truck) is a long haul facility for moving the current from the generator. Usually, it's very high voltage and
unusable by most consumers or businesses. You've probably seen transmission facilities. They're the lines atop high metal towers. (They can be buried underground also).
A distribution service company (the store) takes the electricity from the transmission facility, transforms the voltage, and distributes it to consumers and businesses. These are the lines atop utility poles, although they can also be underground.
So how can you make this work for your data center? An energy broker can help you with this.
