Assistant Professor Jonathan Malen recently received a Doctoral New Investigator Grant from the American Chemical Society. Doctoral
New Investigator (DNI) grants provide start-up funding for scientists and engineers in the U.S. who are within the first three years of their first aca- demic appointment. DNI grants are used to illustrate proof of principle or concept, test a hypothesis, or dem- onstrate feasibility of an approach. Malen was selected for the DNI grant based on his proposal titled “Coupling of Electrons, Photons, and Vibrations in Hydrocarbon-Based Molecular Junctions.”

Professor Allen Robinson was interviewed by Science News about his recent research focused on measuring pol- lution levels caused
by idling jet engines at airports. Robinson and his team captured and measured pollutants, then studied the effects of sunlight on the trapped particulates. They found that, after several hours in the sun, the mass of pollution particles had increased by a factor of 35. The article, aimed at young readers, explains both pollu- tion and photooxidation processes. Read the full article at http://www.

Associate Professor Burak Ozdoganlar and his former Ph.D. student Sinan Filiz received the ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage
Award for their two-part paper entitled “A Model for Bending, Torsional, and Axial Vibrations of Micro- and Macro- Drills Including Actual Drill Geometry.” Ozdoganlar and Filiz were awarded an honorarium and a plaque at a formal presentation during the ASME 2011 International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference, held in June at Oregon State University.

Emeritus Professor Norman Chigier was chosen to write the “Last Word” column for the April 2011 issue of Carnegie Mellon Today. This color-
ful column is written by a member of the Carnegie Mellon family, whether an alum, faculty member, student, or friend. In his column, Chigier remi- nisces about his efforts to found and edit Progress in Energy and Combus- tion Science, which has grown to be the number-one energy journal in the world. Chigier has been the sole edi- tor of the journal for 40 years, while also authoring several books on combustion and sprays. Read his column at

Professor Ed Rubin was featured on the home page of the Carnegie Mellon Web site in an article called “Golden Oppor- tunity.” The article
focuses on how Rubin—who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change—inspired one student to pursue a career in environmental and energy studies. The article can be found at http://

Professor and Department Head Nadine Aubry was recently featured in Pop City—a weekly Pittsburgh e-magazine that focuses on tech-
nology and innovation, job growth, arts, and culture. As part of a regular feature called “Why I Moved to Pitts- burgh,” Aubry discusses the many positive aspects of the city, including its natural beauty and urban charms. She also explains how Carnegie Mel- lon’s interdisciplinary nature drew her to the University: “A lot of problems in the traditional disciplines, be they mechanical, civil, or chemical engi- neering, have already been solved. So the challenge going forward is to blur the boundaries between disciplines.” Read the full article at
