Alumni News MechE Hosts Alumni Picnic O

n Saturday, April 16, the Department of Mechanical Engineering hosted its first-ever Alumni Picnic in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon’s Spring Carnival. More than 60 attendees gathered near the entrance to Scaife Hall to enjoy an informal barbecue while catching up with old friends. Eventually, inclement weather forced everyone inside, but the warm atmosphere of the gathering was not dampened! “We were very happy with the feedback we received following our first Alumni Picnic, and we hope to make this an annual celebration,” says Depart- ment Head Nadine Aubry. “Everyone enjoyed the chance to reconnect with the MechE community, and we expect an even larger turnout for our 2012 event.” Watch the MechE Web site (www.cmu.edu/me) for details about the sec- ond-annual Alumni Picnic, which will be held during Spring Carnival Weekend, April 20-21, 2012. To be added to the official invitation list, send an e-mail to Christine Lambrou at clambrou@andrew.cmu.edu. We hope to see you in the Spring!•

In January, the powerful profes- sional networking site bought Card- Munch, the firm Viswanathan created with fellow Carnegie Mellon graduate Bowei Gai. The company was sup- ported in its early stages by two additional University alums, Sudeep Yegnashankaran and Manu Kumar. Cardmunch lets users convert business cards to phone contacts by simply snapping a photo via a mobile phone. Unlike other services, a team of human transcribers ensures the accuracy of the information transfer. Learn more about the company and its innovative technology at
