Software tool takes the guesswork out of predicting battery life
Energy Micro has introduced a software tool that enables designers to accurately predict battery cell life expectancy in applications based on its low power EFM32 Gecko microcontrollers. Called the energyAware Battery Estimator, this tool provides a full simulation of total system energy usage, that takes into account actual battery source, MCU energy modes, peripherals employed and external circuit components. In simulation mode, system battery voltage output is displayed against time (years) in graph format, with the battery capacity rating (mAh), average MCU current consumption (µA) and estimated system operating time (years) shown numerically alongside. The set-up of a complete system simulation, its energy modes, their related operating times and associated peripheral functions and external component current consumption is via an intuitive GUI, comprising simple drop-down menus, slider bars and checkboxes.
Battery Estimator can model the performance of the seven most popular battery cell types, arranged in single cell or user-defined multiple cell series- or parallel-connected configurations. The tool allows the selection and analysis of all five energy modes of the EFM32 Gecko MCU used with the complete range of low power
peripheral functions available as well as high frequency and low frequency clocks. The facility to factor in the current consumption from any external power hungry components, such as LCDs or speakers for example, further increases the accuracy of the battery life prediction. The energyAware Battery Estimator tool also
provides users with the ability to store complete simulation projects for future reference and to help save initial set-up time, also offers a quick- view demonstration mode to view and edit a pre-configured typical application simulation.

MEE3 series achieves 50% power output increase within the same package
Murata Power Solutions’ MEE3 series is a single output 3 Watt ultra compact DC/DC converter suitable for a wide range of industrial and telecommunications applications. These single-in- line 4 pin packages (SIP4) provide 50% more power than previous 2 W devices using the same industry standard package. In addition, the MEE3 series is much smaller resulting in a 200% increase in power density from 0.9 to 2.68 Watts per cubic cm. Within the series two modules are available
offering either 5 VDC or 12 VDC inputs. The popular nominal outputs of 5, 9, 12 or 15 VDC are available across the full MEE3 range. Typical converter efficiency is from 83% to 89% and is model dependent. No additional forced air cooling or heatsinks are required. The series offers exceptional load regulation, typically in the range 2.7 to 6.3%.
These fully encapsulated units offer 1,000 V input to output isolation and can deliver full power across the industrial operating temperature range of - 40 to + 85 degrees C.
The MEE3 series comply with the
internationally recognised UL/EN 60950 safety standard for IT equipment. The converters provide a pin compatible power upgrade path from Murata Power Solutions' 1 W NKE/NME and 2 W NML series.

22 December 2011/January 2012 Components in Electronics
XP Power has launched the EMH250 and EMH350 series of single output 250 Watt and 350 Watt AC-DC power supplies. Meeting the IT equipment safety specifications of UL/TUV/EN 60950-1 and the stringent medical safety standards of UL/TUV/EN 60601-1 the EMH series suit a broad range of information technology, industrial, medical equipment and surgical life support applications. All models are also BF rated.
Both series have an extra wide input range of
80-275 VAC and are available in four output models covering the nominal voltages of + 12, + 18, + 24 or + 48 VDC. A trim function allows adjustment of the output voltage to within +/- 10% of stated nominal. A +12 VDC / 0.6 A fan supply is also provided across the range. In addition, the EMH350 series includes a +5 VDC / 2.0 A standby supply. Unlike many competitor models, full power is available from low input voltages of 90 VAC and the unit does not derate until +50 degrees C operating temperature. Measuring 76.2 127 x 36.3 mm (3 x 5 x 1.43
inches), these industry standard format units require only 12 CFM of forced airflow in order to deliver the full output power. An optional top mounted fan is available across the range, and the EMH350 has the additional option of a variable speed fan that is dependent on the unit’s operating temperature. The EMH350 series is also available with an optional ORing diode circuit that allows for current sharing in N+1 redundancy configurations. This series provides customers with the choice of either analogue or digital control options. The analogue signals provide Power Fail, Inhibit and Current Share. Digital signals and controls are accessible using PMBus compatible commands.
