where the bulk of the troops would eventually be positioned, because of the aerial perspec- tive. These steps also enabled Mole to calculate the exact number of troops required to complete his composition of the symbol.
Once he calculated the amount of troops needed, Mole would then formulate the amount of hours required to form his composition on the day of shooting. He utilized the colors and variety of military garb used during the different sea- sons, to achieve the depth, shading and structure necessary. In some scenes hats were worn and winter wools.
For The Liberty Bell, Mole and Thomas travelled to Camp Dix, New Jersey, where they assem- bled 25,000 troops into the shape of our national icon. The photo is replete with the famous crack and the word “Liberty,” is spelled out with the help of cue cards. By using the military troops to form the image, Mole shrewdly proved to the nation at large, that our mil- itary involvement is always
undertaken in the name of lib- erty.
The living portrait of President Woodrow Wilson was assem- bled at Camp Sherman, in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1918, and is the best known of all of Mole’s photographs. The photo was composed of 21,000 men and officers under the command of Brigadier General Mathew C. Smith.
By using only the head of Wilson, Mole discreetly empha- sized Wilson’s position as the figurehead of our nation and
