The wisdom of this approval should be evident to everyone who has studied the numbers and understands the limitations of our current convention center. Expanding the convention center means more visitors, more jobs,

EAP Artists on Television Series

"Creative Collaborations"

Creative Collaborations is a televi- sion series based on the art and poetry from the Summation exhi- bition and publications at the Escondido Arts Partnership (EAP) at the Municipal Gallery. John Wolf and James Beck are the producers, directors, and editors behind this series. If you don't live in Del Mar it is easy to watch the episodes on the web - go to

more tax revenue and more income for our hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

The expansion would make San Diego home to the largest contigu- ous exhibit space of any convention center on the West Coast, enabling our city to retain and attract con- ventions of the sort that need more space than the current facility can provide.

The estimated regional economic impact of this expansion is nearly $700 million a year – and 7,000 new jobs. It would also raise an estimat- ed $12 million a year in additional tax revenue that can go toward police, firefighting, libraries and other vital city services.

Keep the Green in the Holiday Season

iday season to keep the green in San Marcos --- and I’m not just talking about shopping local, although that is important. Every time you make a purchase in San Marcos, a portion of the sales tax stays here for important services like fire protection, law enforcement and community pro- grams.

There are sever- al things you can do this hol-

But this week, I’m talking about sus- tainability. For instance, try and min- imize waste when buying gifts by bringing your own reusable shopping bag for purchases. Better yet, give environmentally friendly gifts that do not need wrapping like tickets to movies, concerts, gift certificates,

houseplants or other things that do not come in packages.

You can reduce your electricity use by using LED lights, which use 90 percent less energy than traditional decorative lights. And consider using reusable cups, plates and silverware at your hol- iday parties instead of disposable ones to cut down on trash production.

Finally, when the season is over, be sure to recycle your tree so it doesn’t end up in a landfill. In San Marcos, there is a central drop-off point from December 26 to January 15 at the San Marcos Senior Center, 111 Richmar Road. You can also participate in curb- side recycling with EDCO by placing trees out on your regular collection day during the two weeks after Christmas.

reaching the end of the year and moving towards 2012! And this year,

Yes, the holi- days are mov- ing even faster as we are

Prevention Coalition (NCPC – www.northcoastalprevention- coalition.org) has been hard at work organizing a great event to help celebrate the arrival of 2012 for all of us – a New Year’s Eve Bash at Boomers! in Vista. This family-friendly celebration will provide 1,000 individuals with a fantastic place to ring in the New Year: an alcohol and drug free venue, live DJ, access to a great entertainment center that offers a variety of attractions and games for all ages including Bumper

Boats, Go-Karts, Mini Golf, Laser Tag and more….and don’t forget the Boomers! Café for some well-deserved treats. Though this venue isn’t in Oceanside (darn), I want to be sure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy welcoming in the New Year in a safe envi- ronment and anything organized by NCPC is bound to be just that. Since 1993, NCPC has been working in our region to prevent the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and drug use. Not only will this be a great way to say Goodbye to 2011 and Hello to 2012, but part of the ticket proceeds from this event will be going to NCPC to help fund many of their worthwhile programs that make such a dif- ference in North County. So remember: December 31, 6 PM – Midnight, at Boomers! on 1525 West Vista Way in Vista.
