Carbon Disclosure Project 2011 – Italy 100 Report

Emissions

Emissions disclosed by responding companies account, in total, for more than 560 MtCO2e, more than twice as much as in 20083. Absolute numbers have, of course, increased due both to higher numbers of companies responding and to the effort put into enhancing reporting data, in particular data related to Scope 3 emissions.

There is significant homogeneity in the selection of sources of methodology and GWP data – the GHG Protocol and IPPC reports. Meanwhile emissions’ factors are taken from a variety of sources (i.e. IPCC, Ispra, Corinair, GHG Protocol, UNEP), which - of course - has implications for the comparability of data.

A very significant percentage of emissions reported by Italian companies which responded relates to operations outside Italy: 156 MtCO2e

of Scope 1 emissions (equal to 62% of the total) were in more than 50 different countries. The four companies with the highest emissions account for 92% of Scope 1 emissions and 47% of Scope 2 emissions, while one company alone accounts for 90% of Scope 3 emissions. Total reported emissions have decreased, despite the increase of companies included in the sample. In 2010, in fact, responding companies reported a total of almost 585 MtCO2e; while, as already mentioned, in 2011 reported emissions are slightly more than 560 MtCO2e.

15 of the companies which responded declared they have retired certificates associated with zero or low carbon electricity. The downward direction of change in absolute (Scope 1 and 2) emissions further breaks down into 13 companies decreasing their emissions, 13 increasing them and 2 companies with no change.

The sector in which most companies succeeded in reducing emissions is the Financial sector.

3. Total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions reported represent only companies’ direct carbon disclosure. Many companies’ emissions overlap with each other (i.e. electricity related emissions are direct Scope 1 for a utility and indirect Scope 2 for the company consuming the electricity).

Assicurazioni Generali - emissions’ decrease The main reasons for emission reduction were the reduction in consumption of energy from various sources, reduction emissions through district heating and a substantial reduction in the number of vehicles in the vehicle fleet in Germany.

Finmeccanica – emissions’ increase In 2010 the boundary of the Carbon Management System changed through both reporting perimeter modifications (organizational structure of Finmeccanica Group) and more accurate reporting of fuels used to test vehicles in the Aeronautics & Defense sectors.
