It’s time to loosen the death grip you have on your No. 2 pencil and throw it at universities from every conference. For 12 years you have been quizzed, assessed and challenged. You’ve made piles of vocabulary flashcards, highlighted Shakespeare literature and poured over the Periodic Table. Roles are reversed when selecting which school is right for you. Here are six areas you’ll need to evaluate. With red Sharpie in hand, be a tough grader. After all, this is more than a mark – it’s the beginning of the rest of your life.

Remember in pre-school when Mrs. Miller asked the pigtailed- you what you want to be when you grow up? Though your an- swer probably has changed from your four-year-old response of princess, cowgirl or dinosaur, the question still remains. Foremost, the university must have your area of interest. This might seem like an evident concept but you would be sur- prised to hear how many forego their academic passion to pur- sue field hockey. Yes, you can go to a school undecided, but having a vague idea of what direction you want to go will put you ahead of schedule and better ensure you selected a school that will benefit you not only athletically, but academi- cally. No one wants to hear it but career-ending injuries hap- pen – ACLs snap and tendons tear. Would you still fully enjoy this college without playing field hockey?
