Alcoa is by any mea- sure a giant in the metals game, so it’s a good sign the company has remained com- mitted to its casting branch. The company recently fi lmed a spot for the Fox Business Network’s American Icon series at the Alcoa How- met plant in Whitehall, Mich. The setting makes sense: the investment casting facility is a leader in the high-tech turbine parts industry. Using the location is the second recent indication Alcoa still puts a lot of stock in maintain- ing diversifi cation through casting. On Oct. 12, Alcoa announced the Whitehall plant had shipped its 1,000th

set of titanium investment castings for the 155-mm M777 Howitzer program.

Safety Should Remain Priority in Economic Recovery

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) has released the 2010 recordable injury and illness rates for the metalcast- ing industry. Incidence rates in- creased 11.5% overall from 2009 to 2010 but are below industry levels in 2008. If you take 2009 out of the equation, 2010 rates in general do still continue the trend of safety im- provement. But metalcasters should remember to make safety a priority, particularly as production revs up to meet a growing casting demand that is supplied by a now smaller group of casting facilities.
