orld casting production

increased 13.7% from 2009 to 2010, an indication the world is coming out of the recent economic downturn, according to this year’s MODERN CASTING Census of World Cast- ing Production. However, total world casting production, 91.4 million metric tons, is still down from the 2008 total of 93.5 million metric tons and the peak point in 2007 of 94.9 million metric tons.

Of the 36 countries that pro- vided census data, only four coun- tries reported a decrease in casting production, which is opposite of 2009’s reports, when only five nations reported growth. Canada, Noway, Ser- bia and Slovenia reported decreases. Taiwan showed the biggest growth,

increasing its casting production by 42%. Likewise, Brazil saw significant gains from 2009, showing a 41% casting production increase. Te top-10 list is virtually unchanged

from last year, with Germany, Japan and Russia reshuffling their order in the number four, five and six spots. China, India and the U.S. are still first, second and third, and Brazil, Korea, France and Italy hold the seventh through 10th spots. Te top-10 nations produced 88% of the global total, the same percentage as in 2009. Across the board, nations have

increased their metalcasting produc- tivity per plant since 2009. Germany remains the clear leader in produc- tivity, with 7,808 tons per plant. Brazil has increased its productivity (calculated as total tonnage divided by number of plants) by 39% and

produces 2,393 tons per plant. The U.S. is third in productivity, at 4,038 tons per plant. Te breakdown of world casting pro-

duction by metal has remained similar to 2009, with gray iron taking up 48% of the total 91.4 million tons. After four straight years of reduc-

ing its casting producing, the U.S. reported an 11.2% increase. India continues to make significant produc- tion gains, and its 22% increase puts it in second place. The data reported in the 45th

sus of World Casting Production is supplied by each nation’s metalcasting association or similar representatives. Countries that did not participate this year were Denmark, Mongolia, Russia and Ukraine. These countries remain listed according to the last year they participated.
