In the news

Railnews editor Sim Harris explains why the newspaper is sponsoring the Internal Communications Excellence Award once again

Railnews is the largest paid-for title in the rail sector, and has been published since 1963. Originally it was the staff newspaper of British Railways, and, like the rest of the railway, was privatised in the mid-1990s. Now, around 180 issues later,

Railnews is proud to sponsor the Internal Communications Excellence award, because good communications are vital within today’s railway, as well as to the wider world it serves. Designed to appeal to a wide audience,

Railnews has long been valued for its unique People pages, and it has recently launched a new Business section to provide, among other things, more detailed coverage of the intricate and evolving story of passenger franchises as well as the newest reforms at Network Rail. Backed by a website written to the

same high standards as the monthly print edition, Railnews provides informed coverage of a wide range of issues for people right across the industry. There’s always room in its pages for opinion and

‘The fundamental principle of Railnews is to be objective and balanced’

comment, but the fundamental principle of Railnews is to be objective and balanced, so that readers can make up their own minds. The year 2012 promises to be a lively

one. There will be the tremendous challenge of coping with the Olympics, when people from all over the world will be coming to Britain, where they will be relying on the railways to take them to the greatest global sporting event of all, while Network Rail and the operators develop their plans in the face of a determined and controversial bid to contain railway costs. There will inevitably be ups and downs

along the way, and it may not always be an easy ride, but whatever the story, Railnews will be there to cover it.

Rail Business Awards 2011

Book your table for the Rail Business Awards 2011

The Rail Business Awards 2011 will take place at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, on Thursday 16 February 2012. Tables are now available to book for the 2011 RBA ceremony, which will include dinner and a drinks reception. The awards recognise the cream of

the UK rail industry, with 17 categories plus an overall winner. Last year’s awards were hosted

by Dr Phil Hammond, and while the host of the 2011 event is still to be revealed, it’s sure to be a fantastic evening of celebration of UK rail. Open to any company associated with the UK passenger and freight rail industry, the Rail Business Awards’ aim is to recognise and reward excellence in business; technology and engineering; safety and security; stations and trains; and in creativity and individual achievement.

Once again there have been a

large number of quality entries. The judges will face many difficult decisions, and the judging process is now well underway. A shortlist of potential winners for each category will be drawn up towards the new year. Tables of 10 are available for

£1,895 plus £379 VAT (£2,274 in total), with individual seats priced at £190 each, plus £38 VAT.
