PRESIDENT I
MESSAGE FROM THE 85 OLYMPIC MEDALS AND COUNTING Greetings Everyone,
t is hard to believe, but it is that time of year again-----the start of another season. Throughout the summer skaters across the coun-
try prepared for the new season---dry- land, cardio exercises, biking, building up endurance, ice practices, etc. The winds of change continues to alter
the face of our organization. Executive Director Mark Greenwald continues to work hard building and training his staff to continue to move US Speedskating in a positive direction on all fronts. The Board has seated a new member, Susan Sandvig-Shobe, at the Fall Board Meeting, elected by the Retired Elite Athletes. By the time you receive this edition, election of Officers will have taken place at the Fall Board Meeting as well as a vote to revise the US Speedskating By-Laws, and Committee Chair Training will have taken place amongst other things. One thing that I took away from the Spring Board meeting was what and who US Speedskating is-----the Board, Staff, Skat- ers, Officials, Coaches, Club and Association Officers, etc.----- WE are US Speedskating. It is my hope that WE move together to build an even finer organization then what we have already. There is always room for growth and improvement. There con- tinues to be opportunities to look at new ideas and possibly resurrect old ones. WE need to work together to make growth happen. It will not be an easy task----there is much to do. As the 2014 Olympics approach, we obviously will be focusing on putting together a team that will represent us well and come home with several more medals----adding to the 85 Winter Olympic medals that have already been earned by our Olympic speedskating competitors. But, we really need to look beyond 2014. Development and
growth within our Clubs, Direct Clubs and Associations needs to happen, both short and long track. To continue the tradition of excellence at the Olympic level, growth needs to happen on the local level. Visit the US Speedskating website and download the best practices for recruiting, retention and fund-raising to help in this effort. You will find the document under the Coaches tab; just scroll down to Forms. Finally, all the best to everyone at the start of this 2011-2012
Season and Good Luck to all our skaters throughout the year! Don’t forget, it is again time to renew your memberships with US Speedskating --- as an individual, Direct Club or Association.
Best Regards, Tom Frank
