us feel like family. We would spend sum- mers at their lake house; and winters too. Clair would shovel the snow off a section of lake and we would skate laps,” Kip said. Cory would go on to compete in the 1998 Nagano, Winter Olympics and Kip would earn a bronze medal in 2002 Win- ter Olympics in Salt Lake City and com- pete in the 2006 Italy Winter Olympics. Kip never realized the impact Clair had on his life as a skater, person and now coach, until attending Clair’s funeral. “It was amazing to hear all the people, from all walks of life pay tribute to a man who was truly great. He made the foundation of what my life is.” “If it wasn’t for Clair, life would have been

diff erent. He had a signifi cant impact on me, my brother, our family, even athletes from around the world. If I never met Clair Young, my life would have been a lot less.” Clair lived to the age of 91, passing on just before his 92nd birthday. His im-

mediate family and his skat- ing family cherish the time and memories that he shared with them and miss his pres- ence each and every day. Even though the little things, such as enjoying Clair’s famous melt- in-your-mouth homemade bread to longing to share joy- ous occasions, most recently his grandson’s fi rst cycling race victory, to a simple supportive hug are hard, but all know that their lives are richer for know- ing him.

Elli shared “Each time I step on the ice, I hear his words ‘What ya say, kid?” We say that, Clair Young is

loved and missed by those impacted through his kind- ness and generosity as a fa- ther, mentor and a coach.
