GREENHALGH, Continued from page 25 USA Wrestler: How important are the major Senior level
clubs to the success of the American wrestling program? Greenhalgh: They have to be included. They are very impor-
tant. This is where the wrestlers come from. They have to be strong and respected. They have to be heard from. Wrestlers might be able to make the national team, but they need to take the club step first. We have so many good clubs and we need them badly. In the old days, guys would wrestle for YMCAs who couldn’t help them out very much. It is a two-tiered system now. You have the money clubs, and you also have those smaller clubs that help wrestlers. We want all of those clubs to be involved. I have made sure that the clubs have been heard from.
USA Wrestler: You have served USA Wrestling on the national level, leading the Federation of Clubs, serving on Sports Committee and in many other roles. Why was it impor- tant for you to volunteer so much time to the national effort in wrestling?
Greenhalgh: That is a two-sided thing. Being part of the national picture helped the NYAC. The other side is that the national picture is what we are all about. Any way I could help us be better overseas was important to me. If my opinion is heard, it is good for wrestling and good for our club. I want the USA to do better. I want us to be the best. It is all about the bet- terment of wrestling.
USA Wrestler: Recently, you were named USA Wrestling
Man of the Year, and then received the Order of Merit from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. How did you feel when your received those honors? Greenhalgh: I had two thoughts. One side was I was so
proud to be recognized by my peers. To know I have left a mark on the sport is a great thing. On the other side, I could name so many good people who have worked as hard as me who were not recognized. I got to do things with the NYAC which were very visible. There are so many programs where people work so hard and don’t get noticed. I am a lucky guy and it has been so rewarding for me to be involved.
