CONTRIBUTORS In The Know with Gostelow

Sail the Indonesian archipelago, thanks to the foresight of veteran Dutch mariner Leo van Oostenbrugge. His seven- cabin, two-masted Mutiara Laut schooner visits the Spice Islands in Banda and Komodo for its famous dragons. The crew of 13 of course includes gourmet cooks.

Mary Gostelow is owner-editor of the unique and influential monthly Gostelow Report and is also the Editor-at-Large of www.WOW.travel, the online magazine of Kiwi Collection INC.

Mary also shares her unique insights via ‘Gostelow LIVE’ distributed daily from both ILTM events – including all the latest news and views from the show floor.

Absolute luxury may even involve tents. Minaret Station is a 55,000-acre ranch on the west side of Lake Wanaka, in New Zealand’s South Island. The four Wallis brothers, who own the ranch (and New Zealand’s leading outdoor-gear outfitters), offer heli-camping. Fly in to Minaret Station, for tents with sheepskin carpets and hot tubs, a library, guides and food from the Wallis’ estate. For other adventurers, memorable tent experiences might be camel-milk body lotion in a Mongolian ger (with wood-burning stove) in the Gobi desert. Nomadic Expeditions, led by Mongolian-American Jalsa Urubshurow, provides this experiential rarity.

Herbert Frei has been a fixture on the Galapagos scene for years. This passionate dive photographer heads the 100-foot exclusive-charter M/S Pikaia. He is also founder-president of Pikaia Lodge, around an extinct volcano’s crater on Santa Cruz Island. The five-star eco concept, opening 2013, is already on industry radar (Frei is passionate, incidentally, about social responsibility - Pikaia Lodge supports English teaching in local schools).

Another visionary is Bernard Arnault, brains behind the entire gigantic LVMH empire. He is dipping his feet into luxury hotels cautiously, using his 34-room Le Cheval Blanc, Courchevel, as anchor. At ILTM, Cheval Blanc will be showing its forthcoming Maldives project, on Randheli Island in Noonu Atoll, 40 minutes by seaplane from Male International Airport. This should inspire luxury travellers planning ahead for important anniversaries, or even weddings, to consider an island buy-out, using all 45 Jean Michel Gathy-designed villas.

One challenge after visiting an Indian Ocean – or other – private island can be getting home afterwards. Lufthansa Private Jet, a partnership with Netjets, has a simple luxury solution. Fly Male to Frankfurt and then you are escorted to your requested private jet, from a seven-passenger Cessna Citation Bravo or same- size Hawker 400XP up, depending on the size of your party. You then fly on, wherever, in ultimate comfort.
