Lesson 22 Quiz – Space Science Emerging Section A (look at Concept Poster 8)
1. Which of the following best describes the universe? A. everything in space B. the sun and the planets C. huge group of stars, dust, and gases
Emerging students Teachers read all questions aloud to students.
Emerging students are beginning to recognize and use academic vocabulary. End-of-lesson quizzes at this level feature clearly written questions with familiar illustrations from CAVS concept posters and vocabulary cards.
Lesson 22 Quiz – Space Science Expanding Section B (look at Concept Poster 8)
2. What are scientifi c methods? A. large balls of matter that travel around the sun B. groups of stars that look like they make a picture in the sky C. the ways that scientists plan and do a study
1. Which of the following best describes the universe? A. everything in space B. the sun and the planets C. huge group of stars, dust, and gases
Expanding students Students read the questions and select answers on their own.
Expanding students are progressing toward independent comprehension but still require guidance from illustrations.
3. Large balls of matter travel around the sun. What are these called? Circle the correct picture.

Bridging students Students answer questions independently with very few visual prompts.
4. Planets and other objects move around the sun. What is this whole dynamic called? Circle the correct picture.
Bridging students are reading on their own without the support of illustrations. Students may occasionally need to refer to applicable CAVS concept posters.

We are learning science vocabulary words about outer space and the universe. We are practicing the words in situations we encounter daily. This means that we are using words about planets, stars, and constellations. This is a list of words we are learning in class:

You can help your child practice the vocabulary words at home by doing any of the following activities: • On a clear night, watch the stars with your child. After pointing out major constellations like the Big and Little Dipper, allow your child to make up a story about traveling through outer space. The story can be as silly as he or she wants to make it, but be sure to add corrective details when necessary to reinforce vocabulary such as galaxy, planet, solar system, and universe.
• Draw a picture of the solar system with your child using crayons, colored pencils, and construction paper. Encourage your child to use the words constellation, galaxy, planet, solar system, and universe when applicable.
