Royal Mail Empowering first line managers

Business Challenge

As an organisation, Royal Mail knew that improving overall performance depended on the effectiveness of hundreds of small teams, and first line team leaders, dispersed across the UK. Enabling recently appointed front line managers to draw on their previous experience, and develop the appropriate leadership skills, was seen as critical in order to maintain performance standards.

“We wanted more rounded and professional managers who were able to consider management principles on a wider spectrum.”

Gary Miller, Management Development Trainer, Royal Mail.

Solution

The solution was a Skills Development Partnership with Middlesex. Working with Royal Mail, Middlesex developed a bespoke level 4 Higher Education Certificate in Management Practice.

Tracey White, Senior Work Based Learning Lecturer, Middlesex University.

The programme

The programme is made up of four modules. These are; Managing Yourself, Managing Individuals, Managing Teams and Managing Commercially.

The programme is a combination of workshops and classroom sessions held at the Royal Mail’s own tuition centre. Sessions are led by a combination of Royal Mail in-house trainers and specialist Middlesex tutors. The sessions allow participants to share their experience and the insights they have gained through their work based learning. The partnership also included working with the Royal Mail’s in-house trainers to develop their skills as learning facilitators.

Legacy

“One of the key benefits of using work based learning is that it creates a culture of self directed learning which cascades throughout the organisation. The on-going benefit to Royal Mail will extend far beyond those that actually participate in the training.”
