With eyes still focused on the London Olympics, Walsh has shoulder surgery
ess than one full year from the 2012 Olympics in London where she will bid for a third consecutve gold medal in beach volleyball with partner Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh underwent shoulder surgery on Sept. 13. The surgery repaired a torn rotator cuff, torn labrum and a tear in Walsh’s supraspinatus.

“I presented my doctor with a bit of a challenge, but he knocked it out of the park,” Walsh said. “It’s now my job to work my buns off to strengthen everything I need to strengthen and to work on my mechan- ics. Physical therapy began less than 24 hours after my surgery was completed. We’re on a mission.” That mission started in February of 2011 when Walsh reunited with
May-Treanor in an effort to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. Initally, May-Treanor had said she did not plan to attempt to compete in London, but changed her mind just prior to the beginning of the 2011 international season.
The decorated pair have won 102 events together, including gold medals at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. Walsh and May-Treanor all but wrapped up a spot in London by their performance on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour, which included three fi rst and four second- place fi nishes in 11 events together. Walsh will be 34 by the time the Olympics start in London and she is savoring every bit of her fi nal run with May-Treanor. “Our relation-
ship is so much more special and real,” Walsh said. “We’re on a journey now and it’s something I will cherish the rest of my life.” Walsh expects to be back on the beach in January.
