U.S. U-21 women’s beach team fi fth at FIVB Junior World Championship
he U.S. women’s junior beach volleyball team of Tara Roenicke and Rebecca Stre- hlow lost in the quarterfi nals of the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch Junior (under-21) World Championships in Halifax, Canada, in early September.

The U.S. team fell to Switzerland’s eighth- seeded Nina Betschart and Joana Heidrich, 21-9, 21-12 in 30 minutes after fi nishing pool play 3-0 and defeating Canada’s sixth-seeded Alexandra Hudson and Charlotte Sider, 21-8, 21-18 in the fi rst round of single elimination. Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.), a 2010 FIVB Junior Beach World Championship gold-med- alist, and Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif.) were ranked second in the main draw before fi nishing the tournament in fi fth place. “Playing with Tara makes me play better,” Strehlow said. “She is a world champion and that makes me bring my level up. We also have a ton of fun together, which helps us win.” The USA-2 women’s team of Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Sara Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) battled in the qualifi cation
bracket, but was unable to advance as it fell to Aus- tria’s Teresa Andessner and Christina Wallinger, 22-24, 21-16, 15-6 in the second round. The pair received the fi rst seed in the qualifi cation bracket earning them a bye in the fi rst round. The two U.S. men’s teams at the FIVB Junior World Championship fi nshed ninth and 19th, respectively.
The USA-1 team of Parker Kalmbach (Coto De Caza, Calif.) and Vaun Lennon (Westchester, Calif.), advanced to the fi rst round, where they lost to Poland’s ninth-ranked Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak, 21-18, 21-10. They fi nished the tournament in ninth place. Kantor and Losiak won the 2010 FIVB Youth World Championship.

The USA-2 team of Ian Satterfi eld (Manhat- tan Beach, Calif.) and Chris Austin (Henderson, Nev.) dropped their fi nal pool play match to Spain’s 14th-seeded César Menéndez Ortego and Kevin Medina Tejera to fi nish with a 1-2 record. The pair fi nished tied for 19th.
