Access to money was however identified by staff as a limiting factor in research within the department. Although a research fund had been set up from money collected through collaborative projects, for the purposes of supporting research within the department, these funds were administered on an ad hoc basis. Staff interviews revealed a certain level of dissatisfaction and disengagement with the current situation. Staff remained uncertain about research procedures and also how to access the research fund. Some staff perceived the research fund to be inaccessible and that very little information was available about research in general. The Research Coordinator established


a Research Committee to provide greater transparency to processes. The Committee members include staff from all streams and meet on a monthly basis to discuss key research concerns and

 Leadership in research matters  An increased awareness of research opportunities through dissemination of relevant information  Specialised administrative support through assisting with the ‘red-tape’ associated with research.


ESTABLISHING A CENTRAL RESEARCH UNIT Following commencement of the role, to initially engage staff, the Research Coordinator conducted a series of interviews with staff in the department and hospital, with existing interests in research, to develop a better understanding of needs of the department and institutional procedural requirements. Through this process, the Research Coordinator was able to more clearly identify key issues and potential strategies for improvement, to allow for development of a more targeted position.

emerged:  Staff felt disconnected from research  Staff felt unsupported financially  Staff had no time to deal with administrative tasks associated with research, in conjunction with their existing clinical duties. Using this information, the Research


Coordinator, in discussion with the Director of Research implemented several new initiatives, including some of the following discussed below.


INITIATIVES Improving access to financial support Prior to introduction of the position in October 2008, there was no official coordination of research conducted within the department. Interestingly, the quantity of financial support is not necessarily a key issue in our department, with potential funding collected through work performed for collaborative projects.

In response, the Research Coordinator has developed a form and guide for staff members to clearly define valid items and the decision making process. This guide was developed in consultation with the business manager and executive to ensure compliance with the Research Management Policy of Queensland Health.


ADDRESSING THE DISCONNECT Many staff reported feeling disconnected from research in the department, as they did not see the importance of conducting research as well as completing their clinical duties. The 
