department has not necessarily generated a large amount of research. However, in order to be a vibrant, innovative and creative department, the Department of Medical Imaging (DMI) at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital now aim to

incorporate research as a core component of its every day work activities. Alderson et al highlighted a number of
impediments to a strong research culture in radiology and emphasised the importance of the factors in generating research within radiology departments, including: Strong leadership A culture valuing research within the
department and the institution A core research strategy An ability to use a wide range of resources to support research. In the US this has led to better
encouragement of medical imaging research such as the introduction of the Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) Clinical Trials Methodology
