Meet Jeanne McCusker, philanthropist

Whether you define philanthropy as “the love of humanity” like the ancient Greeks or “the private giving of time or valuables for the pub- lic good” like our modern contemporaries, Jeanne McCusker lives a life of philanthropy.

As owner of Home Instead Senior Care of Charlottesville, Board member at the Senior Center, sponsor of the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program, and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Jeanne works with seniors and their families on a daily basis. “I know how impor- tant resources such as the Senior Center are to our community.”

“In our youth-oriented society, people tend to avoid thinking about aging issues—both their own and those of our community as a whole. Our area’s senior population is expected to increase by 109% (compared to 41% for the total population) in the next 10–15 years. The impact of such a dramatic increase on commu- nity resources could be disastrous, so the need to call attention to these issues is critical and immediate.”

Jeanne believes that education about positive aging, awareness of resources available to age successfully, and recognition that stay- ing active after retirement “are not just concerns for seniors” but must be a priority for all of us. As much as individuals benefit from activities that promote active aging, so do their families and our community—through a reduction in demand for health care and other social services and an increase in volunteer service.”

Jeanne’s passion for seniors and the health of our community mir- rors the values of the Center, making it easy to see why she lives a life of philanthropy through her gifts of time, talent, and resources to the Center.

I know how important resources such as the Senior Center are to our community.”
