9 ECO LIFE This region is bursting with natural attractions, from a boiling lake in Dominica and sulphur springs in Saint Lucia to an active volcano in Montserrat and mysterious blue holes in the Bahamas. Several islands have designated national parks – Tobago was one of the first with Roxborough Rainforest, in 1776. Then there’s the wildlife. View the spectacle of thousands of whales swimming past islands such as Dominica, the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands; watch the night-time parade of turtles along the beaches on islands such as Tobago and Antigua to lay eggs and admire mischievous monkeys. Enjoy the spices of Grenada, perhaps spot a jaguar in Guyana and dive the Blue Hole in Belize.

7 GOLF Caribbean is a golfer’s paradise with perfect conditions, stunning scenery and some of the world’s top championship courses, often designed by leading golf pros, offering challenging fairways that make the best


use of their spectacular settings. With eight championship courses, Bermuda is reputed to have more courses per square mile than any other country, while the Dominican Republic boasts more than 20 courses and Puerto Rico has a similar number. The Bahamas, Jamaica and Barbados have an impressive golfing pedigree and courses can also be found on Aruba, Grand Cayman, Guadeloupe and Nevis.


8 SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN With next year’s Olympics drawing closer, it’s a great time to celebrate and discover the backgrounds of some of the Caribbean’s great athletes and sportspeople past and present


10 MUSIC Music and dance is the lifeblood of West Indians and for many, carnival is a way of expressing their cultural rites. Trinidad is where the steel drum was invented and home to one of the biggest carnivals but all have their own carnivals and festivals. The Spanish islands are more associated with Latin music, Jamaica is irrevocably linked with reggae and ska while Saint Lucia is known for calypso, soca and steel pan, but has also become famous for its annual jazz festival held every year in April/May.
