Tobago, a sleepy exquisite jewel of a place where life moves at a far more leisurely pace. Yet the plane journey between them takes just 20 minutes and the fast ferry around two-and-a-half hours. Alternatively, try the contrasting flavours of the Dutch ABC islands. By jumping on the regular flights between the three islands, travellers can soak up the American- influenced party vibe of Aruba; or relax amid the diving paradise of Bonaire; and enjoy the best of both worlds on Curaçao, noted for


its striking Dutch-style architecture. In the French Caribbean, Guadeloupe’s offshore islands, Les Saintes, Marie Galante and La Desirade also offer a rustic contrast to the more sophisticated appeal of their larger neighbour. Travellers can also hop between Saint Lucia and Martinique by taking a day trip on the L’Express des Iles ferry, which runs regular services between the English-speaking island and its French-speaking neighbour.
