Surveyor of the Fabric Location: London
Westminster Abbey is a unique historical and architectural treasure, encapsulating over a thousand years of British history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day. The Abbey is a living church and occupies a central place in the celebration of great events for the nation and remains one of the most beautiful architectural masterpieces in Britain, attracting over 1 million worshippers and visitors each year. The Abbey is a building of outstanding national and international importance which the quality of care for its fabric has to reflect.
As Surveyor of the Fabric you will be the principal adviser to the Dean and Chapter on all matters relating to the repair, maintenance, conservation and development of Westminster Abbey, its associated properties and precincts. You will have the expertise to deal with planning consents, programme delivery and the appointment of specialist advisers, whilst delivering quinquennial inspections and annual reports addressing the future fabric and furnishings of the Abbey. You will ensure effective working relationships are maintained and developed with the Dean and Chapter, the Westminster Abbey Fabric Commission and planning authorities and will have a significant role in risk management.
