Island Archipelagos Tuamotus

Drenched in transparent lagoons, the Tuamotus are world-renowned for their snorkeling and diving. Spend a day beneath the surface on Rangiroa, or Rangi, as the locals have affectionately coined it, dazzled by an underwater fish frenzy in the reef passes surrounding the island. In nearby Fakarava, a UNESCO-Classified Nature Reserve, dive with gray sharks and fish schooling by the thousands at the famed Garuae Pass, explore the island’s ancient temples and 19th-century coral church, and peruse the black pearls and shell necklaces for which the Tuamotus are famous. Visit Tuamotus on the following itineraries: Society Islands & Tuamotus (p.38) or Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands (p.50).

30 Paul Gauguin Cruises | To the Soul of the South Seas Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are a study in contrasts. Aitutaki is so flat, you can see the ocean from virtually any point on the island. Snorkel the turquoise waters of a lagoon described by many as one of the most beautiful in the world. Rarotonga’s steep, volcanic peaks stand in stark contrast to Aitutaki’s low- lying atolls. Trek through the island’s jungle-clad interior alongside Pa, a local healer, and keep your eyes peeled for the rare Rarotongan flycatcher on a Takitumu conservation tour. The Cook Islands’ natives are well known for their traditional song, dance, and crafts. Visit Cook Islands on the following itineraries: Cook Islands & Society Islands (p.42), Fiji, Tonga, Cook & Society Islands (p.46) or South Pacific Discovery (p.56).

The Marquesas

The Marquesas’ misty mountains and untouched wilderness are shrouded in mystery. Venture into the rugged, waterfall-laden interior of Fatu Hiva by off-road jeep, and explore the chiseled valleys of Hiva Ova, where the air is sweet with the scent of Ylang-Ylang flowers and mango fruit, and where our namesake was buried beneath a statue of a Polynesian goddess. On Nuku Hiva, walk in the footsteps of Herman Melville as you soak up a panorama of windswept cliffs, verdant river valleys, and deep, indigo bays. Visit the Marquesas on Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands (p.50).
