And Finally...

Often called the ‘godfather of hip-hop’, American poet and musician Gil Scott Heron died at the weekend, aged 62. He shot to prominence in the early 1970s with the ‘Winter In America’ album that included his political masterpiece ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’. This documentary here (in six parts) gives a good account of his life and recording career – if you don’t know much about him, watch and learn…

Here’s Gil doing a version of one of his best-known tracks, ‘The Bottle’ – detailing alcoholism amongst the black community.

Most recently, Gil released an album in 2010 called ‘I’m New Here’, released on XL Recordings. Earlier this year, Jamie xx from (The xx) remixed the tracks from the album to interesting effect, with Gil’s full co- operation. Here’s ‘New York Is Killing Me’ reworked by Jamie xx.
