Metalcaster Testifies On U.S. EPA Regulations Bradford Muller, vice president of
marketing and corporate communi- cations for AFS Corporate Mem- ber Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company, Charlotte, N.C., testified on May 12 before the U.S. House of Representatives House Small Business Committee Subcommit- tee on Oversight, Investigations and Regulations at a hearing “Green Isn’t Always Gold: Are EPA Regulations Harming Small Businesses?” Muller testified that exces-
sive U.S. Environmental Protec- tion Agency (EPA) regulations are hurting the metalcasting industry. Specific examples he discussed were EPA regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, national ambient ozone air quality standards, particulate matter, the boiler MACT rule and draft guidance defining the waters subject to clean water jurisdiction.
Bradford Muller, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Co., testified that excessive U.S. EPA regulations are hurt- ing the metalcasting industry at a U.S. house of representatives small business committee hearing.
“Charlotte Pipe and AFS mem-
ber companies understand and sup- port the need for reasonable regula- tions to protect the environment, worker safety and health and a host of other workplace issues,” Muller said. “But we also recognize that our industry and the entire manufactur- ing sector are facing unprecedented pressures in their efforts to remain competitive in the global economy.” The purpose of the hearing was to examine EPA regulations that negatively affect small business, most specifically those related to the Clean Air Act and the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act. The subcommittee heard testimony about how EPA has neglected to take into account the Regulatory Flexibility Act when promulgating regulations despite significant direct and indirect burdens experienced by small businesses. “Te key is to find the balance
between ensuring a safe and healthy workplace and allowing that workplace to compete in order to be able to con- tinue to provide employment,” Muller said. “Tat is where the current U.S. regulatory process is lacking.”
