FATE, FANTASY, and the FUTURE
Are humans doomed to self-extinction? Or can rapid advances in technology reduce or even reverse our negative impacts on the natural world? Anything’s possible. But one determined obstacle stands in the way of a cleaner, more equitable world: human resistance to change.

It’s not too late to change the rules. But we have to accept that current approaches to conservation, energy use, and consumption are not working. Technology “tweaks” rarely solve a problem without an associated mental shift. Better insulation might improve the R-value of a wall in a home, but if the homeowner leaves the window open for fresh air, the house will burn just as much oil as ever.

In this, our annual Technology and Innovation Update, we look at some of the fundamental issues that will decide our future: how and where we’ll live and work, where we’ll get our energy, and how we will move from place to place. The building sector has a role to play, and maybe that’s the best place to start. By using technology wisely, we can, at least, set an example that will bring out the best in others.
