UK a ‘great value destination’
Great Britain offers a good value proposition for for- eign visitors, according to the ninth edition of the Lonely Planet’s Great Britain guide. “In the last few years the UK has become a great value destina- tion for international visitors who flock to Bargain Britain for a cheap holiday,” said David Else, who com- piled the guidebook.

Last week’s Coinslot Review Seaside Supplement was largely very well received, but North Somerset Council was ‘a little surprised’ at some of Weston Grand Pier co-owner Kerry Michael’s comments.
n Coinslot Review’s recent 2011 report on the UK’s seaside sector, Weston-Super-Mare Grand Pier co-owner Kerry Michael stated that he felt the support from his local authority had been ‘poor’ of late. Nick Yates, mar- keting and communications officer of North Somerset Council’s corporate services unit, thinks otherwise. He told B2B: “I’m a little surprised at Mr Michael’s comments. Within two days of the devastating fire in 2008 which destroyed the pier pavilion, North Som- erset Council had organised a meeting of all parties who might have an input into its rebuilding (e.g. Environment Agency, SW Tourism etc) and formed a task force to smooth the way as much as we could on the road to it opening last year. We also arranged for additional

staff to be on hand to help the pier when it did re-open - hardly the mark of an unhelpful council!” According to Yates, there are nine pay and display car parks which the council operates in the town. He added: “As Mr Michael says visitors can also park on the beach. There are also private car parks run by NCP and the Sovereign Shopping Centre.” Yates continued: “Our Tourist Infor- mation Centre is now a larger, much improved facility situated on the seafront in the Winter Gardens and is run by Parkwood Leisure on our behalf.” The council recently completed a £30m plus project to improve sea defences and enhance the promenade in Weston-super-Mare with new lighting, seating and public artwork which, stated
Yates, has received industry recognition and many, many positive comments from both visitors and residents. Pier Square, opposite the entrance to the Grand Pier has undergone a £3.9m facelift, making it a much-friendlier open space, according to Yates, with a restored fountain as its centrepiece. Yates concluded: “Like every other authority, cuts in our funding from gov- ernment mean we are having to make savings which for us amount to more than £47m over the next four years. No area of what we do is untouched from having to make savings. However, we continue to promote North Somerset as a great place to visit and stay and national BBC News has been filming on the beach at Weston which is packed with holiday makers.”
Also on sale is the Crazy Hoop single player basketball game, with a maximum of 32 units can be linked. Six basketballs come with each unit which can be redemption-enabled. The basket moves to increase difficulty and players proceed to another stage if enough points are scored per level. Interested parties can pick up a Crazy Hoop for £1,650 plus VAT.
